Confidence Hints and Tips

Who’s your critical friend? Stop the negative self-talk and achieve your potential.

Posted by Nicola Fox on November 03, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Is your critical friend someone unexpected?

Is the person most critical of you someone unexpected?

Who is your biggest critic?

Who can say things to you that you would not put up with from anyone else? You might be surprised at the answer, because it might be someone you would never have thought of – and it can really affect your confidence.

It’s not that nasty woman at work, or a man in the pub, or someone in your family – if you lack confidence it’s probably YOU.

You could be your own worst enemy.

Most of us have an “internal monologue”, like a personal narrator that comments and talks us through our day. In confident people it’s the voice that says “well done” when things go well, and “it’ll be OK, you can get through this” when things are tough.

In people who lack confidence, this “personal narrator” is still talking, but in a very different tone. Because in people who have low confidence or self-esteem, this voice is telling them they are stupid or shallow, ugly or unlovable. This narrator blames them for things that go wrong around them and dismisses success.

And the sad news is many people don’t even notice they’re doing it.

But you don’t have to be.

The good news is you can change your personal narrator’s tone whenever and to whatever you want it to be.  Here’s what to do:

1. Notice the negative thought:

  • How does it sound? Is it in your own voice, or does it sound like someone else
  • What is it saying?

2. Choose a new voice for that negative thought to take away its power:

  • Make it sound ridiculous or silly. You could try making it high pitched or squeaky, very fast or very slow – whatever works for you is great.

3. Make what it is saying positive:

  • Make it say something you do want

4. Choose a positive, supportive voice for this positive thought:

  • Again, whatever voice works for you is great – your own voice, the voice of someone you admire or an invented one.

5. Turn down the volume on the negative “silly” voice:

  • This reduces the impact of the thought even more. Keep reducing it until you can’t hear it at all.

6. At the same time, increase the volume on the positive voice:

  • This increases its importance and understanding for you.

It might take a little practice, but you’ll soon be able to shut that negative narrator down and turn your positive inner voice right up.

Remember this: You have enormous potential. How do I know? Because everyone does.  I’ve been working with people to improve their self-confidence for 13 years, so trust me – I’m your confidence expert!

No-one can be you better than you – so it’s time to become your own best friend.

NB: Our internal monologue is not the same as hearing or seeing things that do not exist (visual or auditory hallucinations or delusions). If you are experiencing hallucinations or delusions, please go to your doctor as soon as possible.

Priorities & Action – What Do You Need To Do?

To paraphrase Jack Canfield - Do it now!

To paraphrase Jack Canfield – Do It Now!

Success and personal fulfilment guru Jack Canfield said:

“Know your priorities and identify the five powerful action steps that you intend to take to move your initiatives forward each day. If you go to a tree with an axe and take five whacks at the tree every day, it doesn’t matter if it’s an oak or a redwood; eventually, the tree has to fall down.”

Focusing on what you want, and deciding on the steps you need to take, allows you to:

  • move forward effectively
  • recognise all your relevant skills
  • identify the areas where you need to learn new skills
  • monitor your progress
  • see how far you’ve come and
  • congratulate yourself on actively taking control of your life and building the future you want.

So lets get started

Do it now.  Set your priorities, identify your five action steps – and take the first one today.

Hope, despair or action – make your choice wisely

Posted by Nicola Fox on October 01, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Hope? Despair? Action? What does your confidence need?

Hope? Despair? Action? What does your confidence need?

Very often, people have one of three reactions to a problem:

Hope        –     “Something will change. I’ll wait until it gets better.”
Despair    –     “Nothing will change.  I can’t do anything because it won’t get better.”
Action      –     “I’ve got to do something to change this for the better!”

This statement is so true for people who suffer from a lack of confidence too – and you can probably guess which option I would recommend to solve that.

There is an old saying “If you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same result.” Whereas knowing you are doing something to change your situation can actual help you feel less stressed and more confident about your current situation, as well as what you want to do instead.

So, how can you start to take action and take your confidence levels to a new level?

  1. Start with a really good look at yourself – and I mean a GOOD look at yourself.  Avoid picking out anything you perceive as a fault and focus on the things you do well.
  2. Write down all the things you think of – and if you struggle to come up with more than just a few, think about what your friends would say you were good at.  Even better, ask them – they’re your friends for a reason, so there are loads of great things about you do that you don’t even think about (or maybe haven’t even realised are great).
  3. Then read your list back, think about what’s on it.
  4. Now think about this. There was a time when you didn’t know how to do these things, but now you do – and you do them really well.
  5. And that means you can learn to do anything really well – including being more confident.

Keep your list somewhere handy, so you have a confidence wobble you can remind yourself how good you are, and how well you learn.  You’ll soon put yourself back on solid, confident ground.

So choose ACTION – you’ll be glad you did.

How to be a ‘Model’ of Confidence

Posted by Nicola Fox on September 06, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Seem confident, be confident.

How to seem confident and be confident

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to ooze confidence?

You only have to look at them to know that they are in control of their life and doing what they want to do.

Have you ever compared yourself with them and thought “I wish I could be more like that”?  Well, you can.

It’s true – and one of the easiest ways to start is through “Modelling”.

Try these three steps:

  1. Think of someone you admire, someone you think is confident, someone you would like to be more like.
  2. Think about how they present themselves, for example, how they stand, their facial expressions, or how they sound.  Identify what makes them seem confident to you.
  3. Now think about how you could adapt their confident behaviour to make it right for you in your life.

There are two very good reasons to do this:

  • You will actually start to feel more confident, because you are adopting the traits of confident behaviour AND
  • Other people will to see you as a confident person, and treat you as one, which will boost your confidence.

And as you begin to feel more confident, and as you are treated as a confident person, your confidence will actually grow.

So, have a go.  Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Stand up straight, with your shoulders back, and tummy pulled in.
  • Breathe deeply and evenly (this will help you to feel relaxed and keep oxygen flowing to your brain, so you’ll think faster).
  • Make eye contact when you are talking to people, and keep it throughout your conversation.  (Remember to blink!)
  • Smile!

So start “Modelling” – and with just a little practice, you’ll feel your confidence grow.

Look up – and start to feel better

Posted by Nicola Fox on August 05, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Looking up is associated with positive thinking.

Looking up is associated with positive thinking.

This is a really quick tip, and effective way to feel better quickly.

Research has shown that looking down is associated with negative thinking – but looking up is associated with positive thinking.

Seriously, you can improve your mood – just by looking up.

Better still, you get used to doing it very quickly – and once it comes naturally to you, you don’t have to think about it. So looking up and feeling better become your new habit.

So look up – you’ll be glad you did in no time.

“Just” not “Sorry?” How to be Empowered by the Words You Use

Posted by Nicola Fox on June 26, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Make sure you don't undermine yourself - speak positively and let everyone see how confident you are.

Let your words empower you – speak positively and create a great impression.

How we speak creates an impression:

No-one should be told how to speak but it is true that some words and phrases give a better (or worse) impression – and this impression is being created all day, every day, every time we interact. It crops up face-to-face, on the telephone, in emails, in social media posts – the list goes on.

Are you undermining yourself?

So it is worth considering the phrases you use, and whether you could be undermining yourself without realising it.

For example:

“Sorry”

Do you find yourself saying “Sorry” when an apology isn’t required, or you’ve not heard what someone has said? Obviously you should apologise when you have done something wrong, but using “sorry” as your go-to word in conversation makes you appear submissive or lacking in confidence.

“It’s probably me being stupid, but …”

Prefacing your questions with the phrase “It’s probably me being stupid, but …” (or something similar) is another credibility-killer.  Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question – if you don’t know something, you need to ask.

“Just”

“Just”can be another submissive word that creeps into our conversation, as in “I was just wondering …” or “Could I just ask you to …”.  Using the word isn’t necessary, and it undermines your authority.

*!*!

At the other end of the scale, swearing can seem aggressive and unprofessional. It can also imply a lack of debating ability, a poor education or a weak vocabulary.

Make sure your pet phrases are house-trained

And there are lots of others, so listen carefully at your vocabulary. It’s easy to get into the habit of using ‘verbal ticks’, pet phrases we use without thinking.

But if they are undermining how you appear to others, they are doing you an injustice – so make sure they are house-trained, and don’t do anything to embarrass you.

So remember: Empower yourself – speak positively and let everyone see how good you really are.

How Your Motivation Can Make You Confident

Posted by Nicola Fox on June 17, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
What motivates you?

What motivates you? Whatever it is, it can be the making of you.

Sometimes people say the strangest things, even when they mean well or are trying to be encouraging.

For instance, has anyone ever said to you “Cheer up, it might never happen!” when you were worried about something? Or “Pull yourself together” or “Get a grip”? Did it help? No, I thought not – but people still say it.

So, how can you find your own motivation to change or feel better?

Or turn around a comment that’s had a negative effect on you?  It’s all about making it positive.

Try these steps – and there’s an actual example of how this can really work after the steps:

Step 1: Identify what you want to change:

Be as specific as you can.

Step 2: Notice what prompted you to think about it:

Was it a negative thought, or an unhappy feeling?

Step 3: What is that thought or feeling telling you?

Is it saying what you don’t want? Or what you do want?

Step 4: If it’s saying what you don’t want:

Turn that thought around. Acknowledge what you want to stop or avoid, but then focus on what you do want. Be specific, and make a list of your new areas of focus.

OR

Step 4: If it’s telling you what you do want:

Make it more specific, more defined, so you have a clearer idea of what you are changing or working towards. List it out, so you have something to refer to.

Step 5: Repeat these steps whenever you have a negative thought or need to boost your motivation.

You might not catch every negative thought you have at first:

But every one you turn around will help you feel better and more confident.

Here’s an actual example of how it works:

A client of mine was unhappy at work, but because the situation in the office had dragged on for a while, he had started to lose confidence.

He felt stuck in a rut and began to doubt his own abilities.

So we:

  • Changed his mindset

  • Identified his strengths, the type of work he enjoyed and the type of company he wanted to work in (and avoid).

  • Implemented the five steps when a negative thought or comment made him unsure.

All this gave him the confidence to re-do his CV and look for a new job, and then to go on interviews and get the job he really wanted – and deserved.

Now he’s happy – and you can be too.

Even if you can’t change a situation immediately, just having a clear idea about what you want and what you can do about it will make you feel better.

So give it a go. Try these steps and see how they can really work for you.

Stop Fear Stopping You

Posted by Nicola Fox on April 24, 2018  /   Posted in Confidence Hints and Tips
Be confident - and stop fear stopping you.

Stop fear stopping you.

Phobias don’t discriminate

Anyone can suffer from a fear or phobia – even fantastically successful actors can suffer from them.

Hollywood stars suffer from them:

Martin Freeman, star of Black Panther, The Hobbit, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and The Office, recently admitted on the Graham Norton Show that he suffers from a fear of choking

And they are not a joke

And no matter how much other people laugh or poke fun, for the person suffering, they are a very real and very frightening.

Fear is a powerful obstacle

  • It holds us back
  • It stops us doing the things we want or need to do
  • It makes us indecisive and causes us to procrastinate or even give up.

And all that leads to us feeling bad about ourselves, lowering our self esteem and damaging our confidence.
